The strong Tropical Storm, internationally named HAGUPIT, which was swirling over the southern part of the Caroline Islands during the past 24 hours has accelerated rapidly to the west...may pose a threat to Eastern Philippines this weekend.

Residents and visitors along Western Micronesia, Republic of Palau, Eastern Philippines (from Eastern Luzon down to Eastern Mindanao) should closely monitor the development of Hagupit.

About: 755 km southeast of Colonia, Yap Island...or 1,980 km east of Mati City, Davao Oriental
Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 100 kph near the center...Gustiness: 130 kph

2-DAY FORECAST OUTLOOK*

TS Hagupit is expected to move in a straight west-northwest track with a decrease in its forward speed throughout the outlook period. On the forecast track, TS Hagupit will be passing close to the south of Yap Island on Wednesday evening...and shall enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by late Thursday morning or afternoon.

TS Hagupit is expected to continue gaining strength throughout the forecast outlook as it moves over the higher sea surface temperatures (SSTs) of the Western Pacific Ocean. This storm is likely to become a Typhoon later tonight or early Wednesday morning. Advance Intensity Forecast (AIF) shows its 10-minute maximum sustained winds increasing rapidly to 185 kph by Thursday afternoon.

The following is the 3-day forecast outlook summary for this system:

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON: Intensifies into a Typhoon as it passes across the Western Micronesia...about 180 km southeast of Yap Island [2PM DEC 03: 8.2N 139.1E @ 150kph].
THURSDAY AFTERNOON: Strengthens into a powerful Typhoon after entering the PAR...moving across the easternmost Philippine Sea...about 905 km east-southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar [2PM DEC 04: 10.6N 134.0E @ 185kph].
FRIDAY AFTERNOON: Still gaining strength over the south-central part of the Philippine Sea...slows down...about 500 km east of Borongan City, Eastern Samar [2PM DEC 05: 11.6N 130.0E @ 205kph].

Therefore, a turn to the left or right of its future track and changes in its wind speed must be anticipated from time to time.
