Current Status

NEPARTAK (BUTCHOY) downgraded to a Tropical Storm (TS) as it drifts slowly across Taiwan Strait towards the coast of Fujian Province, China. Forecast to make landfall over Eastern Fujian, in between the cities of Xiamen and Fuzhou this afternoon.

 
This typhoon will continue to enhance the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and bring "on-and-off" rains with thunderstorms and gusty winds across the western sections of Luzon and Visayas including Metro Manila today.

 

Where is Nepartak  (Butchoy)?

As of 5:00 AM PhT today, July 09...2100 GMT.  The center was located outside of the northwestern border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), or over the central part of Taiwan Strait (near 24.0N 119.3E), about 177 km north-northwest of Kaohsiung City, Taiwan or 478 km. northwest of Basco, Batanes

 

How strong is it?

Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 100 kph near the center...Gustiness: 130 kph

 

Where is it heading?

North-Northwest @ 11 kph, towards Fujian Province, China.

What areas will be most affected?

Western Taiwan & Eastern Fujian – Today (Jul 09). Rest of Fujian – Tonight and Tomorrow (Sunday, Jul 10).

TS NEPARTAK (BUTCHOY) is expected to move slowly in a generally north-northwest direction during the next 24 hours, and shall turn north during the remainder of the outlook period. On the forecast track, NEPARTAK (BUTCHOY) shall be over the northern part of Fujian Province by early Sunday morning (Jul 10), and over the Fujian-Jiangxi-Zhejiang Border by early Monday morning (Jul 11).

  
TS NEPARTAK (BUTCHOY) is expected to continue losing strength and dissipate throughout the outlook period as the system encounters land interaction with Southeastern China.

MONDAY EARLY MORNING: No longer a Tropical Cyclone (just an area of low pressure) as it moves overland across the Fujian-Jiangxi-Zhejiang Border…about 246 km west of Wenzhou City, China [2AM JUL 11: 27.9N 118.1E @ 30kph]. Confidence Level: LOW.
