Current Status and Outlook

Typhoon MEGI (HELEN) has intensified slightly while slowing down over the western part of the North Philippine Sea during the past 6 hours.  Its outer rainbands are now beginning to spread across the Batanes Group of Islands.

This typhoon is forecast to move West-Northwestward within the next 24 hours in the general direction of Southern Taiwan with an increased forward of 25 kph. MEGI (HELEN) is still expected to strengthen before it makes landfall over Southeastern Taiwan on or before noon tomorrow.

Where is Megi (Helen)?

As of 5:00 PM PhT today, September 26...0900 GMT. The cloud-filled eye was located over the western part of the North Philippine Sea (near 21.6N 125.8E), about 413 km east-northeast of Basco, Batanes or 510 km northeast of Santa Ana, Cagayan. 

How strong is it?

Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 165 kph near the center...Gustiness: 200 kph

Where is it heading?

It was moving West-Northwest @ 15 kph, towards the East Taiwan Sea and Southeastern Taiwan Area.

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON: Downgraded into a Tropical Storm (TS) after making its final landfall over Southeastern China…traversing the Southern part of Fujian Province…about 123 km north of Shantou City, China [2PM SEP 27: 24.5N 116.8E @ 75kph].  Confidence Level:  HIGH.

THURSDAY AFTERNOON: Just a Tropical Depression (TD) as it dissipates over the southern part of Jiangxi Province, China…about 376 km north-northeast of Hong Kong, China [2PM SEP 28: 25.5N 115.0E @ 50kph]. Confidence Level:  LOW
