Current Status and Outlook

A new Tropical Storm named HAIMA (Chinese word for Sea Horse) has been spotted over the Western Pacific Ocean approaching Western Micronesia.

This storm is forecast to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Monday afternoon (Oct 17) and will be named locally as "LAWIN."

Where is Haima?

As of 8:00 PM PhT today, October 15...1200 GMT.  The center was located over the sea east of Western Micronesia (near 9.5N 141.3E), about 351 km east of Colonia, Yap or 1,732 km east of Northeastern Mindanao, PHL. 

How strong is it?

Maximum Sustained Winds (10-min avg): 85 kph near the center...Gustiness: 100 kph

Where is it heading?

It was moving WNW @ 20 kph, towards the islands of Western Micronesia.

Forecast Highlights

- Haima is expected to become a Typhoon (TY) on Sunday morning (Oct 16) and has the potential of becoming a Super Typhoon later.

- Haima is not yet a threat to the country for the next 3 days.

- Haima is forecast to enter PAR on Monday afternoon, Oct 17.

- The 5-Day Forecast shows Haima making landfall over Extreme Northern Luzon on Thursday, Oct 20.  *This forecast is not yet considered final and changes in its forecast track may occur.
